Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
