The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Feedback

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a clearer vision.

Ismailer noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised focus, aiming to better meet player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement follows a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full text from Ismailer's communication:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to consideration and overhauled the title with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our audience.

The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, he officially joins us on next week.

His guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having devoted the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most popular titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all eager to keep seeing the progress of the game in the time to follow.

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, risks, and challenges that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, risk it all, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."

Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but players can anticipate further news as creation advances.
