In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
